Welcome to the North Country Food Co-op, a member owned natural foods cooperative and grocery store where anyone may shop and become a member. We began in 1974 as a buying club and have evolved into a vital business in downtown Plattsburgh. The NCFC adheres to the seven cooperative principles and promotes sustainable communities and businesses, organic and fair trade practices, and local growers and artisans. “Think globally, act locally”.
Our Vision
As a grocery store, the co-op carries groceries, frozen foods, refrigerated foods, bulk foods, supplements and other health care products. As part of our wider communities (local, regional and global) we are proud to put people before profits, and prioritize sustainability, earth- and people-first policy, and an expansive vision of a cooperative and abundant future. We are committed to putting this vision into practice in all ways possible. Whether you choose to shop at the co-op casually or join us as a member-owner or volunteer, you can help make this vision a reality.
Seven Co-Op Principles
Voluntary and Open Memberships
Anyone is welcome to become a member of the Co-op, although non-members are certainly more than welcome to shop. Members “buy in” to co-op member-ownership each year at $10 and in exchange receive a 3% discount on most products in-store—8% for seniors over 62 and members who volunteer their time for a minimum of 8 hours throughout the year.

Members Economic Participation
All elected board members and store employees have access to the Co-op’s monthly earnings statement and have a say in allocating store funds.

Independence
When the Co-op works with other organizations such as banks, it makes sure that these arrangements don’t compromise our commitment to democratic member control and self-management.

Education Information & Information
The Co-op strives to inform the broader community about our core values and our dedication to healthy living. In addition to our online outreach, the Co-op has given tours of the store to student groups, presented at local schools, and worked with organizations such as the Environmental Action Committee and the New Land Trust to spread our message to the surrounding community.
Cooperation Among Cooperatives
The North Country Food Co-op is committed to expanding the cooperative movement and its core values by working with other cooperatives, both directly and indirectly. We do business with a number of co-ops including Frontier Natural Products, who have supplied many of our spices and teas for over 25 years, Organic Valley, and Deans Beans. The Co-op also honors other co-op membership cards and has supported struggling co-ops over the years.
Concern For
Community
The Co-op is also dedicated to the sustainable development of our local economy. We buy a variety of goods from a number of local producers, many based in Clinton County, including honey from Adirondack Bee Supply, produce and cheese from North Country Creamery, and free-range eggs from local farmers, as well as jewelry and a number of other gifts from local artisans. We also support local events such as the Battle of Plattsburgh and the Mayor’s Cup.
